How to Get a Lure out of a Fish

Learn how to get a lure out of a fish as well as other important tasks to get a head start while fishing. Fishing is a great activity you can enjoy at any age. Whether or not you consider fishing a sport, there is something to be said about getting up at the crack of dawn and heading out to the lake before anyone else is awake. Start your own fishing expedition but first, pick up a few new skills.
First: Be kind
If you handle a fish with dry hands or gloves, you remove the slimy layer from the fish. This opens the door for bacterial invasion and even leads to the eventual death of the fish. If you plan on throwing your fish back after your remove the lure, wear gloves.
Second: Use pliers
When actually removing the metal lure, use needle-nose pliers for the best luck. Grasp the hook at its stem and twist and pull it gently. All the while, keep the fish in some water. Push the hook back through the way it came. Do not wiggle it too much if it is snagged. If it is caught too deep in the throat, cut it as close to the body as possible. If you leave it and decide to throw the fish back, it can eventually rot out or get spit out. For fishermen who practice catch and release, this gives the fish a better chance of living than if you damage its throat by moving the hook.
